Who has read this Bloomberg article on President Buhari?

Lol. These people are not serious at all. The article is titled 'Buhari Goes From Nigeria’s Change Champion to ‘Baba Go Slow' written by Daniel Magnowski and published on Bloomberg today. Read the article below..
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari took office a month ago on a wave of hope that he would quickly deal with a deepening economic crisis and an Islamist insurgency in the north. So far, he hasn’t met those expectations.
While Africa’s biggest oil producer has been hit by a 40 percent fall in petroleum prices in the past year that has slowed economic growth and weakened the currency, Buhari, 72, has delayed naming a cabinet until September.
As the momentum of being the first opposition candidate to win power at the ballot box fades, critics are mocking him as a sluggish elderly man, or “Baba Go Slow.”

Buhari has acknowledged the crisis, saying last month that his government is facing severe financial strain, with a Treasury that’s “virtually empty,” and his party is calling for patience. Yet his lack of urgency in tackling economic woes could leave Nigeria badly adrift, said John Ashbourne, an economist at Capital Economics in London.

“Every week that Nigeria goes without a cabinet increases the chance that it will face a dangerous shock -- whether a revenue collapse or a currency crisis,” Ashbourne said by phone Tuesday. “Leaving the federation without a finance minister would be a questionable choice at the best of times; doing so during a period of economic instability is difficult to explain.”

Investor Displeasure

Nigeria’s currency, twice devalued in the past year in an attempt to cope with lower oil income, has weakened 7.7 percent against the dollar this year on the interbank market. The International Monetary Fund estimates that growth will slow to 4.8 percent this year from 6.1 percent in 2014. The naira was trading at 198.85 against the U.S. dollar at 2.38 p.m. in Lagos.
The Nigerian Stock Exchange Index hit its 2015 peak of 35,728.12 on April 2, the day after Buhari was declared the election winner. Since then it has fallen 8 percent.
The cabinet delay won’t please investors, said Alan Cameron, an economist at Exotix Partners LLP. They’re expecting tighter fiscal policy, a currency devaluation and a greater focus on tax collection after the drop in oil prices, he said.
“There was initially some hope that Buhari would be able to tackle these changes more quickly and with more credibility, but the time line has now been pushed back,” Cameron said by phone from London. “It’s going to be a difficult pill to swallow for foreign investors.”

Inertia Concern

The central bank has banned importers from using the foreign-exchange market to buy certain goods as it seeks to stabilize the naira and hold on to external reserves, which are down 16 percent this year to $29 billion.
“Even what little could have been achieved so far, such as the nomination of ministers, has not been addressed, and there is a sense of inertia,” Folarin Gbadebo-Smith, managing director of the Center for Public Policy Alternatives, a Lagos-based research group, said by phone Wednesday.
Buhari’s own party, the All Progressives Congress, has recognized the growing public disenchantment and pleaded for patience.
“Nigerians are right to demand even a faster pace. Nigerians are right to ask that a government be quickly put in place,” party spokesman Lai Mohammed told reporters at a June 30 press conference in Lagos, the commercial capital. “All we ask for is a little more patience, a little more understanding.”

Government Change

Buhari is facing a unique situation because his victory over the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan, ended 16 years of rule by the Peoples Democratic Party, his spokesman Femi Adesina said.
“This is not a normal changeover, it is from one government to another,” he said.
Buhari, who previously governed Nigeria as military ruler in the 1980s, has moved more quickly in the fight against the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, which has waged a violent six-year campaign in the north.
He ordered the army to move its headquarters from Abuja, the capital, to the northeastern city of Maiduguri, the scene of some of the worst fighting, and has traveled to neighboring countries such as Chad and Niger to discuss cross-border military cooperation.

It’s the “one area in which the Buhari administration has hit the ground running,” Mohammed said.
Yet, while troops from Nigeria and Chad have largely dislodged Boko Haram from its self-declared caliphate in the northeast this year, the insurgents have stepped up hit-and-run attacks.

Corruption Fight

Buhari will also have to deal with shortcomings in his own army, which Amnesty International said last month should be investigated for war crimes, including unlawful killings.

In a step toward meeting his campaign promise to attack corruption that has crippled Nigeria for decades, Buhari disbanded the board of the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. The National Economic Council on Monday set up a four-member panel to probe its accounts.
Even some opposition lawmakers say Buhari needs more time.
“His approach may be different, but I am patient, I will give him some time,” Ben Murray-Bruce, a PDP senator, said in a June 29 interview in Abuja.

Where Buhari has come up short is communicating a sense of engagement to the public, said Gbadebo-Smith.
“He doesn’t say anything about anything,” he said. “The public would be satisfied with signals that say we are doing something about this, we are on top of this.”

why is it so hard to appoint ministers? after appointment if you find any of them not performing you can still change them.

Anonymous said...

The same people who built him up - will bring him down - US/UK - dangerous combination for any reasonable developing country. They have set Buhari up to fail - the whole intention is to suppress the once growing Nigerian economy - The appellation "Biggest Economy" in Africa which Nigeria achieved under Jonathan was a source of constant bellyache to the West, especially as Nigeria and Nigerians started re-aligning towards China, Russia and achieving simple developmental goals without the West's usual interloping and interference.

I wish Nigeria well, but I doubt the country will be the same by 2019 - It may be in ruins along the lines of Somalia etc - which is what the West actually prefers - Constant dependence and neo-imperialism.. I still believe the West uses the North and some gullible Nigerians to constantly put Nigeria's development in check.

Nigeria's history is replete with such episodes..

Buhari though "elected or selected" is the wrong choice for Nigeria at this time - This country needs a true democrat and an eminently qualified and exposed personality with gait, clout and quick fire intelligence to get the country out of the doldrums.

Quick question why did the USA reject septuagenarians Mccain in 2008 and Romney in 2012 over a youthful and more articulate Obama twice?

Why has Britain rejected the Labour party's dour candidates - Brown in 2010 and Milliband in 2015 whilst settling for the camera savvy albeit empty David Cameron?

Nigerians .. Know yourselves and learn to ask questions... In saner climates Buhari would have been indicted for gross human rights violations, abuse, truncating a democratically elected government and misgovernment- acts that he committed some 30 years ago and not being rewarded with the highest office in the land, aided by foreign bandits with their superiority complex..

However as David Axlerod intoned.. Nigerians want "Change".. Lets all hope that their little experiment works this time round, but history teaches us that, that would again result in futility.

But if we are honest with ourselves, Buhari earned the title. One month and not even a minister of finance?

Anonymous said...

The article is clearly right.
All those pro APC sycophants should be realistic for once. I strongly suggest the appointment of at least a finance minister. The value of Naira is still dropping.
In all honesty, Buhari did say in his CNN interview that he would tackle corruption and Boko Haram in 2 or 3 months. He really should not have made over-achieving statements of that kind. That's why the public expect so much.
In my opinion, he should stop blaming the past government; let's be honest, when has there ever been a handover when everything was 100 percent smooth?

Anonymous said...

"There is a sense of inertia.” What an understatement.

The just concluded general elections has taught me alot of lessons.

1. You are not assured of tomorrow, make the most of your time NOW; Jonathan had 6yrs as president, there is nothing he could not have done yet he was asking for another 4yrs which just didn't happen.

2. If you don't make the most of what you have, someone else (could be your enemy) will ride on your failed moves - what APC did to PDP

3. A desperate man can promise you anything, just to get what he wants - Buhari's many campaign promises which has not seen the light of the day.

4. There is no such thing as ONE NIGERIA - we keep deceiving our selves that we are one yet the last election is a proof that we are divided by tribe and religion.

5. Nigerians are the most gullible people on the globe - the fact that there still people who believe Buhari's slow approach is as a result of the "empty treasury" he met is just amazing.

...until we drop religious and tribal sentiments and begin to hold our "leaders" by their words ( campaign promises) we can't move forward as a nation.

As far as his campaign promises are valid, Nigerians will keep expecting a miracle from Buhari.

If he didn't make bogus promises during his campaign, no body will be expecting magic from him today.

My brother, well said, but your long story for a short conclusion,it's not how long bur how well right.. Your analysis are not impressive enough. You need a plan to articulate a successful result. It's just like a training athlete who will trains months or years for a game... If we are gambled and this point in time Nigeria will heading for much greater disaster. so stay calm and see the positive side of things. If you've not heard NNPC was spending more than the Federal govt... what a country what a leader we had who doesn't probe anything but take everything with levity. Find out why China left us behind to become a developed nation...

But he didn't promise Nigerians that the change will come in one year, this is the problem.

As far as I can remember, he said "from the first day of this administration, Boko Haram will feel the strength of the new government" but so far, it appears it's the new government that is feeling the strength of Boko Haram.

Over here, people are already beginning to ask questions... this last election was well publicised and alot of people followed up from the campaign processes through the swearing in, they read/heard the promises of Buhari, they had hope that Nigeria will experience significant change but so far, there is no sign of CHANGE, this is the reason people are asking questions.

I get amused by some things I read. What do we really want /need as a nation? Is it some superfluous 'fire brigade' approach to impress people that there is indeed a change that may eventually not last or a careful and painstaking program that will bring about lasting and positive changes. It will appear that some Nigerians love to be deceived going by some things I read. It appears this man is not ready to play to the gallery.

Anybody that has been in one position of leadership or the other will appreciate that to bring about change in any organization is not an easy meat talk less of a nation like Nigeria where we have entrenched forces benefiting massively from the status quo.

For heavens sake we are talking about just one month. If anyone truly expect some real changes within one month, I'm sorry that may not be realistic.

I would have preferred younger, smarter and more ambitious candidates from both parties, who have the educational background, and management expertise to lead a country like Nigeria in the 21st century. Buhari is old, analog, and lacks proper education and exposure, while GEJ lacks several leadership qualities and is generally not a bold person. I think Donald Duke, Nasir El Rufai, Nuhu Ribadu, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Raji Fashola etc would all have been much better presidents. I think a partnership of Ngozi Iweala and Nuhu Ribadu would have been a much better ticket for the PDP, and El Rufai / Fashola a much better ticket for the APC. Maybe something both parties should consider in 2019. What do you guys think ?

I think anon 12:05 is quite correct in his/her assumptions.. Having read and considered the views he/she espoused.. I am inclined to say that most people have failed to get to the meat of the analysis. Firstly I didn't think the above analysis is blaming the West for Nigeria's ills or the case of the black man looking for appeasement as usual, however what the poster is trying to point out is that Nigeria and Nigerians were sold a dummy in Buhari and though the Jonathan administration would not be classed as being the best, however the new administration has already started on the wrong footing. This is what the poster has tried to rationalise by addicting possible reasons for such.. The main issue being that a more erudite person e.g Donald Duke or El- Rufai may have been a better candidate for Nigeria and would have been best enabled to represent us in the comity of nations.. We have all heard about Buhari's latest gaffes in the G7 meeting.. Does that not tell you something about his mental acuity? How then can a fellow with such in capacities lead the worlds largest black nation without making a mockery of it?
Now the link with the west as the poster pointed out was their imposition or tacit support for Buhari during the elections- the poster opined that the West as a result of their vested interest in the affairs of Nigeria wanted someone they could dictate to.. Thereby maintaining the usual master-servant relationship that has existed since colonial days.
I honestly think that the poster whilst not directly criticising Buhari is placing his emergence at this time solely at the feet of the West following their undue interference and influence during the elections. In response to the poster, I would like to think that Buhari despite his shortcomings should be given a chance at the least.. Since he now says he's a reformed democrat.. However for the rest of us .. I think Nigerians should be more cognitive in their reasonings and learn to understand and bear with constructive criticism.. Buhari now has to prove this poster and the New York Times wrong by delivering on his campaign promises.. As we all agree he's dithering too much and there seems to be no policy direction at the moment..

@aro wakiyu , what is fink ?? Do you kids now manufacture your own English language? You claim to know it all but can't even make on comprehensible sentence.

Are you for real with this narrow sentimental post? Why don't you face the article and comment intelligently instead of this nonsense?

Anonymous said...

@Anon 12:05am your comment is the most intelligent I'very ever read on this blog. You're spot on but unfortunately you're only one of a handful of people who get the issues keeping Nigeria down. Majority of the population don'the think or question. They move like blind sheep behind anyone that makes them lofty promises. Such a waste

i think this is too early to conclude! just 30 days of 1,460 days tenure (365 X 4) is too small to measure someone's performance

Haha, I can reply that, I studied econ for some years.
It's not wise right now, given our current situation, to print more money.
That would clearly offset the current fiscal/monetary control ( tight control so higher interest rates, basically less money in the economy)
That is solely the job of the central bank ( don't know how it runs in Nigeria), and with all the strict policies recently (especially with regards to foreign currencies) I doubt they'd print more naira anytime soon.
It's for our own good actually. Lest we flood the foreign exchange market with naira, increase the supply, hence devaluing our currency even further.

Ministers we need some e.g Minister for Finance..they wil spend billions of naira frm now till Sept...wat else wil dat be if not for stealing funds...and Nigerians are been deceived it's all in a bid to clean up d mess in ministries...offcourse u knw where d past minister stoped wrk officially and when ur appointee resumed...there can't be any mixup wth dates..

Am I the only one that has been witnessing better electricity flow in their area since Buhari got elected? Please you all should shut your traps. If our refineries start working this month as stated and power is more constant, if this is all Buhari does in his tenure, I'm sorry but that makes him one of the better presidents Nigeria has ever seen. You all are delusional if u expect miracles in just one month.
