School resumption: GEJ pleads with NUT, says Govt isn't foolish

Speaking with journalists today September 16th in Abuja, President Jonathan appealed to members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT to return to the classrooms on Sept. 22 as there is no known case of Ebola in the country at the moment. Below is what he said...
"We have been able to manage Ebola and the whole world is happy with us and we must tell the whole world that we have managed Ebola and no Nigerian should be segregated because of Ebola. In fact Osun State was to have their festival and the news came to me to cancel it I said no, Ebola is no longer a threat in Nigeria and we must tell the world that we have been able to contained Ebola."
Yes, Ebola is in the West Coast, it could happen in Ghana, it‎ could happen in Senegal or any of the West African countries or beyond but they have not closed down their institutions. If we still have Ebola definitely we will not open any of our institutions but we don’t have Ebola. I dare ask is NUT ‎saying that until the world is able to end Ebola is Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone before Nigeria should open our institutions? It is not right. Government is not a fool, it is not any labour body that asked us to take that decision, we took it because we felt that we must protect our citizens.
This is one government that discusses with anybody that has issues to discuss. Even NUT has no reason to threaten industrial action because of Ebola, the governors took that decision.  I called all the governors of the states to come with their commissioners of health. On the day of that meeting I did not even allow them to speak because they will play politics. I asked all the commissioners including the Secretary of Health in Abuja, to brief us ‎on the steps they have taken and they listened to their colleagues because it was also a peer review process. If you are hiding certain things by the time you hear your colleagues you will go back and get things done.
We are sure that even if one mad Sawyer comes again, nobody will contract Ebola. We have managed Ebola very well, the world is happy we must tell the world that no Nigerian should be suspected of Ebola and that is the position of government. I will plead with NUT and other unions that this does not require industrial action. They should commend government, they should work with us, they are Nigerians, all Nigerians must work together to make sure that we contain Ebola. Why do we want to create problems where it is not necessary, it is uncalled for.” He said

He has Spoken well, and really Nigeria government tried they managed it well,we must commend their efforts but I feel they should tell us what measures they have put in place in public schools especially i.e. sanitizers for these children.

Bros, and you have to plead with them? If they ain't ready for work then hold back their salaries.
Secondly, am disappointed in the fact that even the President still wont allow Sawyer rest in peace. Why call him "mad" Sawyer? I can bet the man did not mean to infect others but only sought for cure to his ailment.

He needs to address the nation and tell them what plan he has to protect the children and then begin to implement that plan. The minister of health did a good job yes, but we need the job to be completed. Until then, I support the NUT in their decision to postpone resumption.

Anonymous said...

U are really very ignorant. Who are u supporting? Their request is different from the president's point. Where is the money set aside for Ebola and others raised by high individuals & institutions? They promised to even train teachers and they didn't. NUT is not made of fools. They know what they are saying and govt is there embezzling money. I've always sided Jonathan before but from this, I've seen his real person. He is highly corrupt. No wonder he couldn't fight Boko Haran. Who knows the pledge he has made to them before he became president in the first place?

Anonymous said...

Publish those schools where the necessary training and materials have been effected, and those that have not. Then parents can decide for themselves whether the suggested date is ok. What could be simpler? Use statistics to buttress your point. We have to learn to be properly transparent and avoid appealing to sentiment. Will the outside world replace any Nigerian children lost because Schools are not yet ready to deal with this potential epidemic crisis? No they will not, and cannot. So publish those commissioners that are effective and sanction the rest. Help us hold our officials to the highest standard. This is what we need now from you GEJ, and we will not forget such executive action.

Don't mind them mr presido. So ghana, senegal, togo and other west africa countries will shut down there schools cos of ebola fear ba? I watched obama last nite on cnn during his press conference on how they plan to tackle Ebola scourge, all through his press conference;I only heard Siera leone, liberia and Guinea been muted and no single mention of Nigeria. And that's good news.

What exactly does NUT want to do as their own contribution to fighting ebola? Must the govt provide everytin for them? Don't dey have PTA associations? Everybody wants the govt to do everytin for dem, and yet some thieves at top echelon of NUT will steal all the funds if govt gives them. Playing politics to steal money.

our government can lie, so when they say they have successfully managed ebola, I kinda find it hard to swallow! but did anyone notice GEJ's gbagaun in the first paragraph?

Anonymous said...

I support NUT 100%. Jonathan wants schools to resume on Monday, but what training and equipment have been given to our schools? I pity public schools because for most their infrastructure is so dilapidated that there aren't even efficient toilet facilities, not to talk of running water. 490 people are still under surveillance in Port Harcourt and even the FG admited that they could come down with Ebola at any time. Though the government has done a good job, until ALL those under surveillance go through the incubation period without getting the disease, then it is too early to start dancing. Isn't it from those under surveillance in Lagos that the nurse escaped to Enugu and the ECOWAS diplomat escaped to Port Harcourt (spreading it to people there)? I read what the 2nd doctor that had the disease went through. Imagine a child going through that. All these politicians that are insisting on rushing our children back to school don't have any of their own children schooling in Nigeria. People should be worried that with the Government’s usual style of putting the cart before the horse, have not taken adequate measures to safeguard our children BEFORE they resume school? All that effort being put into telling parents how irrational their fears are should have been put into showing, not just saying what has been done to protect the children. Prevention is better than cure.

NUT did not say they wont go back to school, they ll ask the government to put measures in place in schools in case issues comes up and needed urgent attention. Let the government use the money appropriated for ebola and also the one Bill Gate donated and provided gadgets for the teachers and adequate provisions for the student. Should we wait for another persona contacts it before we start taking precautions?

Anonymous said...

we don't have to send our kids to school to prove to the world that we've eliminated the Ebola threat. The Osun festival can wait and as such shouldn't be placed over and above the lives of our kids. What we need is visible signs of equipment and vaccines that can be used in case of an outbreak. With that, the common man will have 100% assurance to send their kids to back school

Anonymous said...

All of u supporting NUT are ignorant...claiming love for your children. is it only in schools that you can get ebola..why not close down churches, mosques, supermarkets even the parties these children attend while on break...do all these so called concerned parents lock their children in isolation rooms at the moment?...lazy teachers looking for excuses to sit at home

Anon 12:02: God bless you. You are either a good parent or will make a very good one if you are not yet. You spoke my mind exactly. GEJ is just concerned about scoring cheap points because all i read is about "showing the world that we have contained ebola". I did not see mention of any preventive measures. Ebola still exists even if it has been "contained" here. So the kids resume, most of their parents travel, what if God forbids anyone brings "something" and that child takes "it" innocently to school? Instead of the man to talk of provisions that have been made to schools, eg regular supplies of cholrinated water, hand sanitisers and what not, things that will alleviate every already-frightened parent's fear (like me), he is busy talking about showing the world that we have successfully managed ebola. Oloshi agbaya. Oya, force or beg the teachers back to school o, shebi you will come force the kids out of their parents homes. Such insensitive talk from an insensitive president/government.

Anonymous said...

How has the government assured us that ebola has been contained? A government that does not have control over the identities of its citizens. How do we know there are no secret clinics all over with doctors like the one in Port Harcourt? What measures are being put in place to ensure that our children are protected when they go back to school. How about the public schools? As a mother I am anxious to see my children back in school however I am not ready to put their lives at risk. How do you teach a 5 year old to watch out for the symptoms of ebola? We have to be SURE our children will be safe when they do go back to school. Please FG, do not use our children as scape goats. Thank you

Anonymous said...

If we don't have any more case of ebola, we don't have any more case, period. The situation was well managed and teachers should go back to school.

Cheta said...

if sawyer wanted cure he would ve said that he had ebola disease immediately he was admitted in that hospital but instead he wanted to leave and spread it more if not for Dr stella Rip. say what you know

Everyone is asking what the givernment has done to protect the children. What have parents done to protect thier children? I'm just sad that Nigerians are making an issue out of a no issue. These same children we are protecting are the same ones that have been attending summer school and sunday school, why should regular school e an issue.
There is no Ebola in Nigeria again, let's all be positive.
