Nigeria Military fires GOC attacked by convicted soldiers

The Nigeria Military authorities have retired the former General Officer Commanding the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Maj. Gen. Abubakar Mohammed, who was attacked by soldiers at their barracks in Maiduguri on May 14th. The soldiers have since been sentenced to death for that action by a military court.

According to Punch, Mohammed was retired after he was recalled to the Headquarters of the Nigerian Army without posting for months after the soldiers’ attempt on his life.
It was gathered from a top military source in Abuja that the Army authorities quietly retired him last month.
The source said, “The Maj. Gen. has been retired; you don’t expect that to be made public; issues of retirement especially in the military are confidential. The man was at the Army headquarters for some time. He was awaiting posting then   but he was eventually retired about a month ago.”
Meanwhile, the NLC, TUC and human rights lawyers have urged the Presidency and the Army Council chaired by the Minister of Defence to prevail on the military authorities to spare the lives of the 12 soldiers.

Why sentence them to death when you have fired an erring GOC? Two wrongs don't make a right.

I dont give a damn about him. That shows that he is guilty too.Why not sentence him to death for pushing more than 20 soldiers to death.

My prayer is that the military authorities will spare the lives of the 12 soldiers sentenced to death

If they dont want military war

Y is the army sounding corrupt?

I don't agree to spare their lives. I do agree that they should make sure they have all the evidence necessary before finalizing the verdict. If they tried to kill their commander, than they are murderers and should be put to death. Simple. I would not be able to sleep at night, knowing those insane men are on the streets.

If they kill these soldiers, it will be too bad becos this will create a divided army which will not be focused enough to combat this Boko Haram terrorists...... I can just see Boko Haram laughing their heads off.... this is a major distraction and the timing is so so wrong.

It is very unfair to sentence pple to death just like that without looking at the grass root cause of the problem critically. why then should their boss just be asked to retire. soilders trained to kill dont miss. What was the message they were sending? has anybody asked? And lastly we cant create a life so don't take one on small maters. those who have stolen billions still roam the street. its time we start thinking and stop using the poor as an example for rich pple who steal

This shows that they are somehow right on what they did.

They should give them life in prisonment than a death sentence.

Nigeria should spare the lives of these men. I think they only showed their anger in a wrong way and did not mean to kill their commander because if they meant to kill him and the commander escaped from more than 10 soldiers then they are not fit to be soldiers but only good enough to fetch water for women to cook in the kitchen.
Yes, agreed they over reacted and they know the rule of the game yet they are human beings and could have suffered the same fate their dead colleagues suffered.
The GOC that caused the death of the soldiers was not tried but only retired.
God help NIGERIA. Toks

Its a conspiracy thing,i saw a situation where d 12 convicted soldiers re been purnished becos dey refused 2 join d bad wagon in our Military ouse

My dear the general set them up and the watch their members killed by boko haram, so the decided to take the law in their hands.

C-quiin said...

their lives should be spared please

www.lifeasvira.blogspot.com said...

It doesnt change the fact that other will be killed because of his poor leadership.

Anonymous said...

Is it because he is a GOC or that he comes from the north or what. The GOC should be tried for treason. It takes a lot of infuriation for the soldiers to take up arms against their GOC... a lot of things have probably been happening under their watch. There is clears lack of justice in the verdict.

Anonymous said...

You all might not know that a retired general is still entitled to his full salary and benefits. So this guy was just deprived of power while the rank and file will die for his ineptitude.

It is high time all our sleeping human rights activists should wake up to fight for the soldiers.the sentence is too harsh ,they can send them to jail instead.

THE G.O.C ABUBAKAR MOHAMMAD IS B/H MILITARY GOD HALP US

Unknown said...

Who is right? Who is wrong? Obviously the 2 parties cannot be in the wrong. But I see contributory culpability in this matter. That is, the soldiers were wrong to take laws into their hands by shooting the Major-General but the Major-General contributed to the culpability of the soldiers by exhibiting bad leadership and provoking the rank and file to mutiny.
Even a Major-General may be court-martialled and made to face a firing squad for sabotage.
However, if the punishment of a Major-General is mitigated, same should go for the soldiers.
True, mutiny and in-subordination carry grave consequences, but I believe strongly that punishment by death may be too harsh in the present circumstance and may send a negative signal to all personnel.

Anonymous said...

ALL NIGERIAN NEED TO STAND UP FOR THESE 12 SOLDIERS AS CIRCUMSTANCES MADE THEM DO WHAT THEY DID. PREROGATIVE OF MERCY BY THE PRESIDENT

Unknown said...

Please the military should review this punishment by death. I agree that mutiny carries grave circumstances but we need all the human resources we can lay hands on at this time.
The military may reduce the sentence to a term of imprisonment with hard labour or send them to Liberia to work in an Ebola Camp.
Honestly, for a soldier, there are worse punishments than death.

Anonymous said...

While I honestly wouldn't like the soldiers to be executed, I fully understand why they should be....apparently it's the law...they committed military crimes punishable by death..also if they are not punished, it would be sending a message to other soldiers that they are free to break the rules and go scott free...

Now whether the GOC was wrong or right, mutiny is wrong...in the military, someone of superior rank should be able to tell you to even kill your best friend (without you revolting)...if he was wrong, it's not up to you to decide...but his own superiors
